Watch the video: Charles III. makes for big laughs during speeches at Bellevue Palace.
The first day of his state visit to Germany saw the British King Charles III. a state banquet in the Berlin Palace on Wednesday evening. In addition to the king and his wife Queen Consort Camilla, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Elke Büdenbender received numerous high-ranking guests from politics and society: from former Chancellor Angela Merkel to former Federal Presidents Horst Köhler and Joachim Gauck to Toten Hosen singer Campino. At the beginning of his speech, which was partly held in German, Charles demonstrated a profound knowledge of the host nation’s New Year’s Eve traditions. “It’s wonderful to have such a large company tonight. And nice of you to come and not leave me alone with a dinner-for-one.” Charles announced that he wanted to develop relations between the two countries. Germany and Great Britain have a great interest in each other’s future. In this way we can work together towards a more sustainable future. Charles’ visit to Germany is part of efforts to improve relations between Britain and the European Union following the country’s exit from the Union. As always, selected specialties from Germany should have been on the menu: Among other things, pickled carp and Erfurt watercress, broth from Heck beef, later East Frisian black tea and sand biscuits. On the second day of his state visit, the British King is expected to give a speech in the German Bundestag.
