Watch the video: Pope Francis leaves the hospital and jokes: “I’m still alive!”
STORY: Pope Francis has returned to the Vatican. The pontiff left the hospital in Rome where he had been treated for bronchitis on Saturday morning. He wasn’t afraid, he explained to the waiting journalists. “I’m still alive,” said the pope, apparently in a good mood. The 86-year-old was admitted to the Gemelli Hospital in Rome three days ago after complaining of breathing difficulties. According to his medical team, Francis responded well to an infusion of antibiotics. At least he did his job at the clinic, too, with a visit to the children’s ward, including the christening of a newborn. His recent hospitalization had renewed speculation about a possible resignation for health reasons. In the last two years, Francis has had to have bowel surgery and has started using a wheelchair or a cane because of chronic knee pain. According to the Vatican, the pope will attend the Palm Sunday service this weekend. The important event in the church calendar ushers in the celebrations of Holy Week. And these days before Easter are tough: the dense program includes rituals and ceremonies that can be physically demanding, for example a Good Friday night procession through the Colosseum in Rome. The dean of the College of Cardinals, Giovanni Battista Re, has stated that a cardinal will assist the pope and take the altar ministry during this week’s celebrations.
