It will be the second movie of Apple’s awards season set for an ambitious theatrical run.
Apple Original Films was associated with Sony Pictures Entertainment and set the world premiere in theaters for November 22 (probably 21 in Argentina) of Napoleonthe historical action epic directed by Ridley Scott and starring joaquin phoenix as the French conqueror Napoleon Bonaparte and Vanessa Kirby like Empress Josephine. After the theatrical release, the film will be broadcast globally on AppleTV+.
This marks Apple’s second awards season film set for an ambitious theatrical run, after Killers of the Flower Moondirected by Martin Scorsese and bound for Cannes, will be released at the end of October through Paramount Pictures. Paramount had some rights to Killers and was always part of the Apple deal, but this is the first time Apple has come out and lined up on a single distribution deal. Sony’s Tom Rothman often worked with Scott when the filmmaker worked at Fox, and will be prepared to help maximize the award chances of the director, who has yet to win an Oscar but has been nominated three times for Best Director for Thelma & Louise, Gladiator and Black Hawk Down.
Directed by Scott from a script by David Scarpa, Napoleon tells the story of the origins of the French emperor and military leader and his swift and ruthless rise to emperor. That’s seen through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love of his, Josephine. The film captures Napoleon’s famous battles, relentless ambition and astonishing strategic mind as an extraordinary military leader and war visionary.
Produced by Apple Studios in conjunction with Scott Free Productions, Napoleon is executive produced by Scott, Kevin Walsh, Mark Huffam and Phoenix, with Michael Pruss and Aidan Elliott serving as executive producers.
