Jeanne du Barry, the new Johnny Depp, will open the Cannes Film Festival

The film marks Depp’s comeback as an actor after a three-year hiatus following his long-running legal battle with his ex-wife. Amber Heardculminating in a libel suit won by Depp in December.

The sixth feature film Maiwennthe period film revolves around the tumultuous relationship of the French King Louis XV and his mistress, Jeanne du Barry (played by Maiwenn), whom he brought to the Palace of Versailles to live near him despite the fact that she was not a noblewoman. Louis XV, nicknamed “the beloved”, eventually died an unpopular king after being accused of corruption. He reigned for 59 years, the longest in French history after that of Louis XIV. Depp barely spoke French before filming began, so it will be interesting to see how he pulls it off without an accent.

Maiwenn was previously at Cannes in 2011 with “Polish”which won the Jury Prize, and in 2015 with “My King”which earned Emmanuelle Bercot the award for best actress. It is also expected that Jeanne du Barry participate in the official competition.

He Cannes Film Festival will announce its Official Selection on April 13 and has already confirmed a couple of films, including “Killers of the Flower Moon” of Martin Scorsese and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” from Disney. Ruben Ostlundtwice Palme d’Or director of “The Square” and “Triangle of Sadness”will preside over the jury.
