Spanish television actress, Ana Obregon68, revealed that the alleged newly adopted daughter was conceived using the frozen sperm of his deceased son and that she is actually his granddaughter, with which a debate on the bioethics of surrogate motherhood and the right of children to privacy in Spain is revived.
The baby, a few weeks old and named Ana Sandrawas born to a surrogate mother identified this Wednesday by Lecturas magazine as a Cuban woman residing in Miami (Florida).
“This girl is not my daughter, but my granddaughter”said in an interview the television actress Ana Obregón to the magazine Hello! posing with the baby for the cover.
“If my son’s last will and testament was that, how can I not do it?” he said, adding that only parents who have lost a child have a right to weigh in on the matter.
Obregón’s only biological child, his son Álex Lequio, passed away from cancer in 2020 at the age of 27. He was related through his father’s line to King Felipe VI of Spain.
Hello! reported on March 29 that Obregón had adopted a child born by surrogacy in Miami, sparking a debate in Spain, where all forms of surrogacy – including the so-called “altruistic” ones, in which there is no exchange of money – are illegal.
Following that article, several government ministers criticized the practice. “It’s a form of violence against women,” said the Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, who added that there is a “clear poverty bias” in relation to women who become surrogate mothers out of financial need.
Meanwhile, Obregón indicated to Hello! that surrogate motherhood is not a contentious issue in the United States. “Here the people are [sic] open, but in Spain, my goodness, we are in the last century,” she said, adding that her son had originally wanted five children, so she could not rule out more surrogate births using his sperm.
Obregón rose to fame in the 1980s and starred in Spanish comedies in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He also made cameo appearances in American series such as “El Equipo A”, “Quién es el jefe?” and “General Hospital”.
On Wednesday, he announced on his Instagram account that a book written with his son would go on sale on April 19.
