In 2019, the adaptation had achieved a release date for 2021 by the director’s hand Taika Waititi (Thor Ragnarok, Jojo’s Rabbit) but was later put on hold when the director decided to work on the next Thor movie first for Marvel. Now, a rumor indicates that the filmmaker intends to pick up the project.

This Saturday, Justin Kroll, editor of the specialized media Deadline, said that for him “Taika Waititi’s next movie is going to be Akira for Warner Bros.“. The journalist stressed that some in Hollywood say the script will be sent to the studio for approval very soon.
Kroll stressed thate this does not mean that the film will be made definitively, since it still must be approved and receive a budget from the company. Still, it’s a point in favor of the production that Waititi has as his next defined project.

Akira is based on the manga series written and drawn by Katsuhiro Otomo. between 1982 and 1990 that are located in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo of the year 2060. The series had an anime film adaptation directed by Otomo himself in 1988 and tells the story of a secret military project that puts the entire city in danger after turning a gang member into a psychopath.
The rumor of the film, which until 2019 would be produced by Leonardo DiCapriogained strength within the framework of the Star Wars Celebration and the mystery of why there was no mention of the movie of that universe that Waititi confirmed to be writing.
