Johnny Depp is preparing for his return to the big screen in the next edition of the cannes film festival as a co-star in his inaugural film Jeanne-du-Barry on May 16.
The actor stars in the period romance as Louis XV alongside the actress and filmmaker Maiwennwho plays the titular 18th courtesan and also directs.
The French-language role marks Depp’s first big-screen appearance in three years as he rebuilds his career after winning a turbulent libel suit against his ex-wife. Amber Heard last June. His last appearance in a feature film was in the biopic minimata of W. Eugene Smith.

The film is loosely inspired by the life of Jeanne du Barry, the last royal mistress of Louis XV at the Court of Versailles, a woman of humble origins who used her intelligence and charm to rise in society, ruffling the feathers of the establishment in the path.
Maiwenn he also co-wrote the drama with Teddy Lussi-Modeste and Nicolas Livecchi. It is her sixth feature film and her most ambitious work to date, after Polissewinner of the Cannes Jury Prize in 201 , and the most recent titles Mon Roi and DNA.
The film is produced by Pascal Caucheteux and Grégoire Sorlat of Why Not Production Company, IN.2, Johnny Depp’s production company, La Petite Reine and France Télévisions.
