The cycle “The beauty of terror” of the National Museum of Fine Arts will open the 2023 season of Fine Arts Cinema with four classic works of the genre that will be screened on Fridays and Saturdays from April 21 to 29, with free admission.
The programming will include horror classics such as “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror”, by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau (on Friday, April 21); “Phenomena”, by Tod Browning (Saturday the 22nd); “The carnival of souls”, by Herk Harvey (on Friday the 28th); and “Night of the Living Dead”, by George A. Romero (on Saturday the 29th).
Leonardo D’Esposito, programmer of the cycle in which the Friends of Fine Arts association also participates, explained that the Museum chose these pieces not chastely: “They are cursed films in a certain sense, totally mythical films, which also expanded the possibilities of aesthetic representation at the cinema”.
“There is a prejudice with horror movies, based on the look of films that rely exclusively on the physiological effect of the viewer, on the barrage of scares. However, it is one of the most thoughtful and metaphysical genres: it targets the primordial fears of the human being, turning them into monsters and apparitions,” D’Esposito said.
“The dark room of the cinema -he continued- fills us with restlessness, a necessary condition for fear. Hence, a large part of the masterpieces of cinema are horror and horror films. It is necessary to be precise: ‘terror’ is fear of looking (and the perverse fascination for not looking away); ‘horror’ is not only a superlative of the above, but also the rejection of what has been seen, the after effect after having succumbed to the vision of the monstrous”, he analyzed D’Esposito, on the identity of the cycle.

The functions of Fine Arts Cinema will be on Fridays and Saturdays, at 7:00 p.m., in the Museum room, located at Avenida Figueroa Alcorta 2,280 in Buenos Aires. Located behind the Museum, Bellas Artes Cine has a capacity for 235 spectators and is dedicated to the projection of films that usually do not reach commercial theaters.
In 2014, the space was restored with new seats, acoustic and technical improvements, and a modern and comfortable architecture.
