This last weekend De Armas was the guest star of the American television classic Saturday night Live. As is tradition, De Armas introduced the show with his own monologue, to later be seen sharing a sketch with Carol G. (musical guest artist of the night). During the aforementioned monologue, the actress surprised locals and strangers by starting to speak in Spanish.

“Thanks thanks. I’ve had an amazing year and I’m so happy to be here hosting the show tonight.” Of course, De Armas is fluent in English, and he demonstrated it by rapidly changing languages: “I speak English, but I didn’t speak it when I came to the US. I was born in Cuba,” he explained. De Armas went on to narrate what his experience was in the northern country.
De Armas told an anecdote about what helped him the most to learn English. “I came here at the age of 26 and I learned English the way everyone who comes to this country does: by watching Friends”. The beloved sitcom was, in its original version, a great strategy to master the language, and De Armas specifically identified one of its members as the best teacher he could have had.
“Who would have thought that the best English teacher would be Chandler Bing? I mean, look at me now, could my English be any better?”she added proud of herself. Then De Armas released a great revelation, and that is that she is about to obtain American nationality. “It has been a magical year. Not only have I been nominated for an Oscar, but in three weeks I will officially become an American citizen.”
“Something that makes me very proud because, when I came to live here, everyone was very kind to receive me”
