“My father wrote the novel as a passionate and visionary response to the aftermath of war. He understood that his relevance would not go away,” said Judy Golding Carver, the daughter of William Golding. “I think he would appreciate the freshness and vigor with which Jack and Joel embark on the project, and he would no doubt be moved by their intense commitment.
“Our family has been encouraged by our conversations with them, and as a result, we are confident in their abilities and enthusiasm. My father was proud of the novel and had faith in his power and honesty. His family believes that this adaptation will do full justice to these qualities.”
Thorne said the idea came from a discussion between him and Wilson about development. “Joel shot himself and said that he had been pestering representatives of the Golding family for years. Soon after, he found a way to get to Judy Carver, and then he brought me and I’m so glad they entrusted us with this incredible book,” he added.
