In the future, instead of biennial, the “Festival 4020” in Linz invites you to experience contemporary music. “We want to give contemporary music in Upper Austria even greater importance,” says Dietmar Kerschbaum, Artistic Director at the Brucknerhaus, who will be in charge of the festival from now on after curator and festival co-founder Peter Leisch retired after 20 years. This year’s motto traces the element in which music unfolds: time and how we perceive it.

With the Linz Lizard Ensemble

In a “Long Night of World Premieres”, the 15-member “Lizard – Linzer Ensemble for Contemporary Music” and its director Katharina Roth will premiere 18 works by young composers, all born between 1973 and 2005. Twelve talents present their works in the Brucknerhaus for the first time. Avant-garde classics can also be experienced: pianist Elias Gillesberger performs “As slow as possible” in John Cage’s work of the same name at the start of the festival (free entry). Morton Feldman’s (1926-1987) second string quartet, played by Quatuor Zaïde, invites you to a five-hour listening experience in deckchairs. The latter also organizes a “night concert” at 10 p.m., including the Austrian premiere of Emma O’Halloran.

The Jewish Chamber Orchestra is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the silent film “The Old Law” with new music by Boulez student Philippe Schoeller.

A musical journey through time with the Ensemble CrossNova awaits young audiences aged six and over. Free entry is only valid for the opening concert for the future annual concert series.
