On special occasions, Europe’s royal families like to gather frequently on their palace balconies. But not only to wave and be celebrated – they also want to convey important messages in this way.
The 83rd birthday of Denmark’s beloved monarch Margrethe II last weekend would not in and of itself have been cause for particular excitement. Normally, the queen would probably not have shown herself so solemnly to her subjects in her city residence, Amalienborg Palace. It wasn’t a milestone birthday, nor was there a special occasion like last year’s golden jubilee.
