John Travolta’s ‘Saturday Night Fever’ suit sells for $260,000

The white polyester suit, which includes a jacket, vest and pants, in which Travolta danced to the Bee Gees hit “More Than a Woman,” went under the hammer in Beverly Hills on Saturday for $260,000, Julien’s Auctions said . The auction house had previously estimated the value at $100,000 to $200,000.

Travolta, now 69, became a superstar almost overnight in 1977 as Tony Manero in “Saturday Night Fever”. The role of the dance-loving New York underdog earned him his first Oscar nomination. The auction of the suit took place as part of the “Hollywood: Classic & Contemporary” auction.

A program signed by Marilyn Monroe and other stars for the birthday celebration of then US President John F. Kennedy in May 1962 brought in almost 89,000 dollars. A bamboo walking stick that once belonged to movie icon Charlie Chaplin has been auctioned for $39,000. A Golden Globe trophy won by Maximilian Schell (1930 – 2014) for his supporting role in the television film “Stalin” (1992) came to a good 16,000 dollars.

Nearly 1,400 items were up for auction in the two-day auction, which was set to continue on Sunday. Other highlights include Harrison Ford’s machete from Indiana Jones, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man helmet and Michael J. Fox’s hoverboard from Back to the Future 2.
