Ed Sheeran He said he will leave the music industry if he loses his ongoing copyright infringement trial.
The singer-songwriter is currently in court proceedings for an accusation of plagiarism related to his 2015 song. “Thinking Out Loud”.
In 2016, the pop star was sued for Ed Townsend one of the co-writers of the classic song by Marvin Gaye “Let’s Get It On”who accused him of copying the song in “Thinking Out Loud”.
The indictments allege that Sheeran and the co-writer Amy Wadge they copied the rhythm from the 1973 song, as well as an ascending four-chord sequence. It also references “striking similarities” between the two copyright-infringing tracks. Sheeran denies claims that he copied Gaye’s song.
Speaking in court in Manhattan on Monday, the artist took the stand to insist that he would “finish” the music if he was found guilty. “If that happens, I finish, I stop,” he said as he described the cost the lawsuit is taking on him. “I find it really insulting to dedicate my whole life to being a performer and composer and have someone diminish it”he added.
During the case, Sheeran’s attorney, Irene Farkas, told the court that the song was written “without copying” Gaye and features elements commonly used in pop music.
However, attorney Ben Crump retaliated, claiming the singer “confessed” to copying Gaye when he mixed the two songs together at a live show (via The Associated Press).
“If I had done what they accuse me of doing, I would be an idiot to be on stage in front of 20,000 people. [y hacer eso]Sheeran said last week (April 25), responding to the allegations. (via Rolling Stone). “I think most pop songs are built on building blocks that have been freely available for hundreds of years.”
Meanwhile, laughter reportedly broke out during the trial after an AI version of Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” was played in court.
The singer-songwriter made headlines over the weekend after his wife Cherry Seaborn revealed that the singer wrote “seven songs in four hours” after learning of his cancer diagnosis. Sheeran has previously said that new songs from him, many of which make up his upcoming album ‘-‘ (Subtract), due out May 5, build on the “unbreakable” bond he formed with Seaborn through the sickness from him
