“Turning point” Syria agreement: USA and Russia praise cooperation

Russia’s UN Ambassador Vasily Nebensja said in New York that the compromise on Friday in the most powerful UN body could be a “turning point” for relations between the two countries.

US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said: “I definitely see that it is an important moment in our relationship. And it shows what we can achieve with the Russians if we work diplomatically with them on common goals”. She looks forward to continuing to work with Moscow on issues of mutual interest.

Following a US-Russian agreement, the Security Council had previously unanimously decided that the UN may continue to bring relief supplies to Syrian rebel areas via a border crossing to Turkey. The new resolution is valid for one year. As an ally of the Syrian government, Russia had previously signaled that it would also like to close this last of four previous border crossings for such UN aid. UN goods could then only have passed through Syria’s government.
