At the age of 94: fashion designer Uli Richter died in Berlin

He made post-war Berlin a fashion metropolis again. Hildegard Knef and Princess Gracia Patricia were among his customers.

The fashion designer Uli Richter is dead. The designer and former professor of experimental design in clothing design at the University of the Arts died on Thursday at the age of 94 in a hospital in Berlin, as his long-time lawyer announced, citing Richter’s closest circle.

The judge, who was born in Potsdam, began training as a textile merchant after the war and imprisonment. He then decided to become a fashion designer. He won the 1957 International Cotton Festival in Venice with a bead-embroidered evening dress with a velvet coat. Two years later, Richter went into business for himself, followed by the first prêt-à-porter collection in 1962. So Richter made post-war Berlin a hip fashion metropolis again.

The customers included celebrities such as Rut Brandt, Hildegard Knef, Lilli Palmer and Princess Gracia Patricia. In 2005, the Berlin State Museums acquired his extensive collection, which has already been shown in exhibitions.
