The gun that US actor Alec Baldwin fired on a film set in New Mexico last week, killing camerawoman Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza, has not been properly checked, according to the authorities and according to a new file from the court. Santa Fe County’s Sheriff Adan Mendoza said Wednesday that Baldwin fired a 45-caliber Colt pistol loaded with a sharp lead bullet, adding that the filmmakers were negligent about on-set security. “The lead bullet that was fired was removed from Mr Souza’s shoulder. We assume that this bullet came from the weapon that Mr Baldwin fired.” Souza was injured in the incident. Hutchins died from the gunshot wounds. Mendoza and District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies said no one had been charged so far, but all options were on the table and no one would be excluded from the investigation. Hannah Gutierrez, the crew member in charge of the firearms, said the court records said the weapon had been checked prior to the exercise and did not contain live cartridges. According to the protocol, assistant director Dave Halls told the police that he had not checked all the bullets in the revolver’s drum. Hundreds of pieces of evidence were found during the search. “Three firearms, approximately 500 rounds of ammunition, and several items of clothing and accessories.” Baldwin, cooperating with the investigation, had practiced drawing his gun and then pointing it at a camera. He was probably not aware that he was firing live ammunition.
