The right-wing US moderator Tucker Carlson recently lost his job at the US broadcaster Fox News, which is considered the mouthpiece of Donald Trump, who was found guilty of abuse in a civil lawsuit.
Now Carlson, who had used his high-rating evening show to spread conspiracy theories, hate speech and fake news, surprisingly announced that he would start a new edition of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” (2016-2023) on Twitter.
In a video on the short message service, he emphasized “that there are not many platforms that allow freedom of expression anymore. The last big one is Twitter.” Fox News surprisingly announced the separation from the Californian in April – without giving a reason. It happened shortly after the media group Fox had reached an out-of-court settlement with the US voting machine manufacturer Dominion for damages of 787.5 million US dollars (around 714 million euros). “The jury only had to decide whether the right-wing TV channel maliciously reinforced Donald Trump’s lies about rigged elections through its reporting” before an agreement was reached at short notice, wrote OÖN-US correspondent Thomas Spang.
Musk grants but warns
He had complained because Fox News had spread reports about alleged manipulation of his voting computer in the 2020 presidential election. Carlson was also in focus.
Twitter boss Elon Musk responded to Carlson’s announcement with a tweet. He pointed out that Twitter users could criticize and refute claims. He wanted to make it clear “that Tucker is subject to the same rules” as everyone. He hopes “that many others, especially from the left, will also produce content”. However, observers attested to the tech entrepreneur’s arbitrariness in dealing with journalists. Profiles of media professionals have been blocked for alleged violations. Users who are known for right-wing hate speech have been allowed to return to Twitter.
Compared to Europe, it is massively more difficult to take legal action against agitators in the USA. This is based on the interpretation of the freedom of speech sworn by Carlson, it is in the 1st Amendment of the US Constitution.
