Good news for Austria’s Chancellor Sebastian Kurz: As the 34-year-old reports on his Facebook page and Instagram, he is going to be a father for the first time.
“We are overjoyed and grateful that there will be three of us soon,” writes the ÖVP politician. “A wonderful joint task awaits us, which we look forward to with great anticipation.”

The social media posts are illustrated with a joint photo of Kurz and his long-term partner Susanne Thier, a business educator, in a cornfield. The two have been together since they went to school together in Vienna. The 35-year-old employee of the Ministry of Finance largely stays out of the public eye. This should also apply to the expected offspring. “I ask for your understanding that we will keep our private life private as before,” wrote the Chancellor.
Whether Kurz and the “First Lady” are expecting a boy or a girl is still open. The child should be born in November or December, the Chancellery in Vienna announced at the request of the DPA news agency.
Austria’s Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen congratulates the couple: “I congratulate Susanne Thier and Sebastian Kurz on their upcoming offspring. All the best and, above all, health!” He wrote on Twitter.
In the past few years there had been rumors about a possible wedding of Sebastian Kurz and Susanne Thier, which should heat up the news of the upcoming offspring again. It is not known whether and to what extent Austria’s Chancellor wants to cut back on childcare after giving birth.
