Duchess Meghan received an award for her efforts towards equality in New York on Tuesday evening. But the actually happy evening apparently ended in a chase.
Duchess Meghan received an award in New York on Tuesday, appearing at the glamorous event alongside Prince Harry and her mother Doria Ragland. Now a spokesman for the couple has revealed what happened after the event.
Meghan and Harry followed by photographers in New York
As reported by the BBC, among others, the three are said to have been chased by several paparazzi in vehicles, and there was an “almost catastrophic chase,” the spokesman said. The photographers are said to have bothered the trio for more than two hours. There were several near-accidents “with other drivers on the street, pedestrians and two New York police officers”. It was a “relentless pursuit”.
“While being a public figure entails a certain level of concern from the public, this should never come at the expense of the safety of others,” the spokesman said. “The distribution of these images, given the manner in which they were obtained, encourages a highly intrusive practice that is dangerous for all involved.” An insider told Page Six how the incident unfolded. “It started with 12 paparazzi and ended with four who [Meghan, Harry und Doria] pursued. Their security guards did their best to lose the photographers,” the source said. The three were said to be in shock.
Memories of Diana
The incident should bring back bad memories, not only for the public, but especially for Prince Harry. His own mother, Princess Diana, died in a Paris tunnel in late summer 1997 after numerous photographers followed her vehicle and chased her. In his autobiography “Reserve” (“Spare”), Prince Harry reveals that he was in Paris himself a few years after her death and drove the route. He asked his driver to drive at the same speed as Diana’s driver had done in 1997.
The death of his mother is one reason why Prince Harry has always harbored a grudge against sections of the press and especially the paparazzi. The clicking noise of their cameras is traumatic for him, he once said in an interview.
