Assassination of Haiti’s President “in the blink of an eye”

The head of state was shot dead in his home in Port-au-Prince on Wednesday night. According to police, a murder squad made up of “26 Colombians and two US citizens of Haitian origin” was involved in the attack. Martine Moïse was injured in the attack and flown to Miami for treatment.

“In the blink of an eye, the mercenaries broke into my house and riddled my husband with bullets (…) without even giving him a chance to say a word,” said Moïse in the audio message. It should not be allowed “that his blood was shed in vain”.

Martine Moïse said that her husband had campaigned for the expansion of the infrastructure and for elections in the autumn. “This is a fight that he fought for us, it has to be continued.”

After the attack, 17 suspects were arrested and three others shot. According to official information, some alleged accomplices are still on the run. The attack on the president had sparked international fears that the Caribbean state, marked by instability and poverty, would slide further into violence.
