Proud Mary (1971)

Tina and her husband Ike were best known for their version of the gospel-influenced song “Proud Mary” released by the band Creedence Clearwater Revival two years earlier. The Turner duo’s version was rockier and more salacious – and earned the couple a Grammy award. Tina Turner continued to sing the song while performing solo, making it her trademark.

“What’s Love Got To Do With It” (1984)

The release of this song marked Turner’s establishment as a successful solo artist after her professional and personal split from Ike in 1976. The track was her only number one hit in the United States and earned her four Grammys. The song’s title also became the title of the 1993 Oscar-nominated film about her life.

“We Don’t Need Another Hero” (1985)

In the theme song to the post-apocalyptic film Mad Max, starring Mel Gibson, Turner plays the ruthless, chainmail-clad blonde Aunty Entity. She wears a similar outfit in the video of the song, which warns against false hope and oppression.

“The Best” (1989)

Turner’s cover of a Bonnie Tyler song became a hit on her 1989 album Foreign Affair. In 1990 the song, renamed “Simply the Best”, was used to promote Australian rugby league. The piece turned into a sports anthem sung in stadiums around the world.

“GoldenEye” (1995)

As a megastar, Turner was chosen to sing the coveted theme song to the James Bond film “Golden Eye,” written by U2’s Bono and The Edge. The song stormed the top ten in many countries.
