What do Ceferino Namuncurá, Gauchito Gil, the Difunta Correa, Maruchito or Pancho Sierra have in common? How is it conceivable that the Pomba Gira, the Virgin of Itatí, San La Muerte or Pachamama coexist in the same devotional arc? What postulates Tibor Gordon, Gilda, Maradona for pious admiration? the curators wonder.

Any series that is traced between the figures of the popular devotional prompts questions that do not admit conclusive answers. “The very nature of the myth encompasses all the contradictions of the story that animates it, making them coexist in a state of irresolution. For this very reason, questions are asked again to try to understand the validity of a type of social actions that persist beyond the circumstances that believe,” they point out.
The sample covers, on the other hand, “the existing bibliography on the subject, a varied heritage treasured by the National Library, made up of relevant academic research as well as regional literary works, publications of religious publishing labels and quasi-anonymous popular sales brochures habitual in santerias and festivities, among others,” they add.
The first tour will take place on Thursday, June 1 at 6:00 p.m., in the Leopoldo Marechal Room and the meeting point will be on the ground floor of the National Library, while the second tour will take place on Wednesday, July 5, at 6:00 p.m. , and on Monday, August 7, the last visit, at the same time.
The exhibition “Argentine Popular Devotions” can be visited until August 27 in the Leopoldo Marechal Room, from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
In the Plaza del Lector Hopscotch and as part of this exhibition, “Saints and Sanctuaries” is exhibited, a photographic exhibition by Marcelo Huici, open until August 27.
The Mariano Moreno National Library is located at Agüero 2502, in the City of Buenos Aires.
