Nobility: Queen Silvia of Sweden sails across the Neckar

Queen Silvia set sail with the “MS Queen Silvia” in bright sunshine. The existence of the German-Swedish Society was celebrated. And there was also a benefit event.

Queen Silvia of Sweden (79) sailed across the Neckar in her native town of Heidelberg on a ship named after her.

The 50th anniversary of the German-Swedish Society, of which the Queen is patron, was celebrated with the trip on the “MS Queen Silvia” in the evening. During the trip on the ship, the program included classical Swedish music, and an asparagus menu was also served.

“It is a great, great joy for our association,” said the chairwoman of the German-Swedish Society Heidelberg, Margret Dotter. “And it is the culmination of our work to promote cultural exchange.”

Benefit event for World Children Foundation

The cruise was also a fundraiser for the World Childhood Foundation. The foundation was brought into being by Queen Silvia in 1999 and offers contact points for abused children with so-called Childhood Houses. Queen Silvia also opened such a house in Heidelberg in 2019, and the German-Swedish Society collected donations of almost 30,000 euros for the Queen’s foundation. On Friday, Silvia had already received honorary citizenship from the city of Heidelberg.

At the 1972 Olympic Games, the current Swedish Queen met her future husband, Carl XVI. Gustav of Sweden. She worked there as a VIP hostess, Carl Gustav was still crown prince. The two married four years later.
