Singer: Sophie Ellis-Bextor: career only thanks to the song “Groovejet”

“I don’t know what would have happened, but ‘Groovejet’ was really my lifebelt,” says singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor. At first she didn’t want to sing the song.

Singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor (“Murder On The Dancefloor”) believes that she would not have found success as a singer without the disco hit “Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love)”. “I probably wouldn’t have a career at all,” said the 44-year-old in an interview with the German Press Agency in London. “I don’t know what would have happened. But ‘Groovejet’ was really my lifeline – not only because it was a hit, but because it changed my perspective as well.”

In 2000, she sang the song by Italian DJ Spiller, having previously failed as a singer with indie rock band Theaudience. “I was 20 and had no idea what to do,” said Ellis-Bextor. “I knew I wanted to keep making music, but I thought, what are the chances of me getting a record deal again?”

At first she didn’t want to sing “Groovejet”. “At first I thought I didn’t want to do dance music, I’m an indie musician,” says the singer. Then she saw the potential to change her style of music. “That inspired me and was the foundation of my pop career, my solo career. I thought to myself: Man, I can actually do what I want. It’s okay. I don’t have to follow any rules. Without “Groovejet” I don’t know whether this realization had come to me.”

Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s new album “Hana” will be released on Friday (June 2nd). Inspired by a trip to Japan, it features eclectic indie pop with synthesizers and a touch of 80’s sound.
