At her marriage to Carl XVI. Gustav von Sweden received asparagus plants from the Electoral Palatinate as a gift from the native of Heidelberg. These still thrive in the garden in Stockholm.
Queen Silvia of Sweden (79) is a fan of asparagus from the region in which she was born, Heidelberg. At her wedding, she received asparagus plants from her parents’ farmer, she told the “Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung” (Tuesday). He showed her how to plant, care for and prick them. She passed that on to her children. “Since then, we’ve had home-grown asparagus from the Kurpfälzer district in Stockholm.”
At the Olympic Games in 1972, today’s Swedish Queen met her future husband, Carl XVI. Gustav of Sweden. She worked there as a VIP hostess, Carl Gustav was still crown prince. The two married four years later.
