Quentin Tarantino He shared his thoughts on movies released directly to streaming, saying it’s “almost like they don’t exist in the spirit of the times.”
In an interview with Deadline, the famed director opened up about his “retirement” from filmmaking, reflecting on a statement he made in 2009 about leaving the movie business at age 60.
Here, he shared that he has always believed that movies were made for theatrical release and because of streaming, the movie no longer exists.
“I like the idea of giving it your all for 30 years and then saying, ‘Okay, that’s enough.’ And I don’t like working with diminishing returns. And I mean, now is a good time because I mean, what is a movie anyway? Is it just something they show at Apple? That would be diminishing returns“, said.
He continued: “I mean, and I’m not picking on anyone, but apparently for Netflix, Ryan Reynolds has made $50 million on this movie and $50 million on that movie and $50 million on the next movie for them. I don’t know what those movies are. I’ve never seen them, do you understand?”
The director also talked about his upcoming final film, The Movie Critic, and he talked about how he will probably do it with Sony. Here he said that “they are the last game in town that is absolutely, totally, committed to the theatrical experience.”
“This is not about feeding your streaming network. They are committed to the theatrical experience. They judge success by the asses in the seats. And they judge success by movies that get into the zeitgeist, not just by making a big, expensive movie and then putting it on their streaming platform. Nobody even knows it’s there,” he added.

The Movie Criticwhich will be set in 1977 Southern California, will be based on a real-life film critic for a pornographic magazine, which the director used to read as a child and worked as a vending machine restocker.
He recently shared that the upcoming project will go into “pre-pre-production” this June, and that he is currently looking for an actor in his mid-30s to play the lead role.
