Prince Harry longed for a “normal life” years ago

In early 2020, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan left the UK, leaving their lives as senior royals behind. Particularly critical voices blame Meghan for the Royal exit. An old interview now reveals that Prince Harry had had the same thoughts much earlier.

Anyone who has read Prince Harry’s memoirs “Reserve” (“Spare”) should have come to the realization early on: today’s Duke of Sussex never felt really comfortable in the British royal family. On several hundred pages, he describes not only the distance within the family – especially after the death of his mother Diana – but also his difficult relationship with the British press.

Prince Harry thought about “a normal life” from an early age

In 2020, Harry and his wife Duchess Meghan decided to turn their backs on life as working royals. These decisions were preceded by talks with the family members, which made it clear to both of them that an interim solution – they continue to work, but if possible not with England as their main focus – would not be possible. And so the so-called “Megxit” followed, the departure of the Sussexes.

As the name suggests, the critical voices in particular made Duchess Meghan responsible for the fact that Harry, who was once so popular, wanted to leave his home country. It was quickly drawn, the picture of the evil woman influencing her husband. But was it really like that?

“Not just a bunch of celebrities”

In the end, only those involved know who the “Megxit” mastermind was. But as an old interview quoted by the “Daily Mail” shows, Harry had had such thoughts for at least three years before his official retirement. “I’m committed to living a relatively normal life and if I’m lucky enough to have children, they can have one too,” the prince said in 2017, when he already knew Meghan but was still a working royal. Harry longed for this “relatively normal life” even during his youth.

In “Reserve,” he details how working in the British Army and on the front lines in Afghanistan gave him a welcome break from royal life. How normal he felt as a soldier among many. And how he was then at least temporarily protected from public view. It is relatively unlikely that Meghan was responsible for the exit of the two.

“We don’t just want to be a bunch of celebrities, we want to use our role for good,” Harry also said in 2017. Using their role for good – Harry and Meghan have also written that after 2020. “At Archewell, we are unleashing the power of compassion to drive systemic cultural change,” says her foundation’s website.
