Rosalynn Carter, wife of former US President Jimmy Carter, has dementia.
Rosalynn Carter (95), former First Lady of the United States, suffers from dementia. Her family said so via the Carter Center on May 30. The wife of Jimmy Carter (98), the former US President, is therefore still with her husband in the town of Plains in the US state of Georgia.
Carter family raises awareness of stigma
“She continues to live happily at home with her husband,” the statement said. There she enjoys the spring and visits from friends and family members. For much of her life she has campaigned for mental health and against the stigma that is often associated with it.
The family is aware that this stigma still exists today – more than half a century after Carter first drew attention to it. It often keeps affected people and their families from seeking support. It is hoped that sharing the news of Rosalynn Carter’s health could help generate more “important conversations around kitchen tables and in doctor’s offices across the country.”
Rosalynn Carter’s husband, Jimmy, was President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. The two have been married since 1946. The Carter Center announced in February 2023 that the 98-year-old has entered hospice care of his own volition after several brief hospitalizations. He wants to spend the rest of the time “at home with his family”.
