The fate of the gorilla Bua Noi in a horror zoo in Bangkok has been stirring people for years. The actress Felicitas Woll has sent an emotional letter to the operators.
Just in the hedgehog costume on “The Masked Singer” and now in action for gorillas, orangutans and Co: The actress Felicitas Woll (“Berlin, Berlin”) is committed to the keeping of great apes in zoos and supports her campaign slipped into the role of a primate behind bars. “Zoos are prisons for animals!” Said the 43-year-old from Hamburg. “In great apes, 98 percent of the DNA is identical to ours. With what good feeling could I look at this creature, which is so similar to us, through a pane of glass or bars?”
In particular, Woll, together with the animal welfare organization Peta, is campaigning for the great apes in a much-criticized private zoo in the Thai capital Bangkok – and has now written an urgent letter to the owners. All of the animals at the Pata Zoo, located on the roof of an old shopping mall, were showing signs of extreme mental distress and had to eke out a life in isolation and without the company of their own kind, Woll wrote.
Sickness in the concrete cage
Female gorilla Bua Noi (“little lotus”) has languished in a concrete cage at the zoo for more than 30 years – devoid of nature, distractions or sunlight. Several orangutans and dozens of other primates are also locked up in cages that are far too small. “The animals are serving a life sentence there through no fault of their own. This place must finally be closed,” demanded Woll.
Animal rights activists and celebrities like pop icon Cher have repeatedly tried to have the great apes relocated to a more dignified enclosure. The owners of the zoo, also known as the “horror zoo”, have always refused. “I urge you to accept the offer,” Woll wrote. Many people around the world followed Bua Noi’s story and her suffering with growing concern.
Animals deserve to live as nature intended, emphasized the Hessian native. “Imagine the joy it would bring to fans of Bua Noi in Bangkok and around the world to see her wallow in the grass, climb trees and form relationships with other gorillas.”
