The portraits and people combine the warmth of Cuban society with a digital world that, according to project co-founder Gabriel Guerra, can seem cold and distant.
“The stories that people have told us literally draw Cuban society, our daily life, our pain, our dreams,” Guerra said in an interview.
Cuba, a country known for its old cities and cars and spotty internet service, has seen a boom in crypto art. Photographers and artists like Guerra use encryption digital platforms to access markets and audiences that previously would have required artists to leave the country or for a buyer to take a flight to the island.
“This can bring Cuban artists not only the freedom to create, but the freedom to connect with collectors (…) or the fact of creating their presence on the internet,” he said.
After the official launch of the project in December, 20% of the proceeds, in the cryptocurrency ether, will be delivered to the subjects portrayed, allowing 1,492 Cubans to access the “crypto world,” according to the project’s website. Cuba said in August that it would authorize the use of cryptocurrencies, one of several Latin American countries that recently showed interest in regulating digital currencies.
