Barry Newman, star of the movie Vanishing Point and the Petrocelli series, has died

Diagnosed with throat cancer in 2009, he left acting until he returned with one last film in 2022. He was 92 years old.

He was 92 years old and died on May 11 in a New York hospital, his death confirmed by posts from friends on social media. No cause has been established.

Newman had appeared on Broadway and in the film The Lawyer (1970) (later made into the Petrocelli TV series) when he was offered Vanishing Point. In the movie, his drug-addicted character was tasked with delivering a car from Colorado to California, with the stipulation that if he could do it in 15 hours, his meth purchase would be free.

The movie was directed by Richard C. Sarafian and became a cult classic, as Cleavon Little kept up a constant stream of radio talk about the epic journey. Nothing less than Steven Spielberg he called it one of his favorite movies.

Newman’s film resume also includes Daylight of Sylvester Stallone, The Limey of Steven Soderbergh and 40 Days and 40 Nights. She was also in the movies City on Fire, Amy, and Good Advice, among other movies.

On television, he appeared in LA Law, Murder, She Wrote, The Fall Guy, and The OC, the latter where he played Professor Max Bloom.

Diagnosed with vocal cord cancer in 2009, Newman stopped acting but returned to star in the independent film Finding Hannah in 2022.
