The Linzer Theater des Kinder takes up a classic by Erich Kästner on the occasion of the Schäxpir Festival: “The Conference of Animals” premieres on June 15 at 10 a.m. In the book, published in 1949, all the animals band together because, despite many conferences, people are unable to guarantee peaceful life on the planet. The animals call a conference and then resort to more drastic measures…
Henry Mason, who is directing, wasn’t immediately enthusiastic about the idea: “I got bored with the book as a kid because of the long speeches,” he says. So he edited and updated the piece. “I was surprised how modern the story is and how easy it was to adapt.” Katharina Schraml, David Baldessari and Simone Neumayr are required to perform at their best as actors. They not only play three archivists, but also 16 animals and seven other roles. Puppets and objects are also used. For theater director Andreas Baumgartner, the play is a success even before the premiere: all dates are sold out by the summer. (hes)
