“The music for the first episode is the most difficult”

Froideval and Zlotnik are Argentine but have been working in Mexico for more than a decade and have positioned themselves among the main music producers in that country. In addition to successes such as the three seasons of Luis Miguel’s biopic series, “Selena”, “La casa de las flores” and the current “Maradona, dream blessed”, both have worked on dozens of albums by artists such as Molotov, Julieta Venegas and Natalia Lafourcade, obtaining multiple gold and platinum records. In addition, Zlotnik has put his sax at the service of musicians of the caliber of Gloria Gaynor or John Zorn and dozens of international jazz interpreters with whom at some point in his career he came to do hundreds of shows a year.

Zlotnik arrived in Mexico with his saxophone in 2001: “I went there just before everything explodes, and the first thing that caught my attention about Mexico was its size; it is all very big, huge. And there is also a tradition of playing live that in Argentina was lost a long time ago; For example, in the smallest town if there is a party there will always be a band that plays live, and any musician can earn a living doing that. Afterwards I performed in many sessions, many produced by Camilo, and at one point I realized that, unlike other instruments, the sax has only one musical voice, and then I began to arrange for other instruments, thus I had several voices. And that’s how I went from one place in the studio glass to another ”.

Producer

Instead, Froideval has already arrived in Mexico as a producer: “I had a band since I was a kid and I never liked how our demos sounded. Also, when I bought a record, I read all the credits, and I wondered what would be the work of, for example, George Martin with The Beatles. So at one point I became fascinated with the studio knobs, until I got a job as an assistant and produced demos for my friends who also had bands. And one day the sound engineer was missing and they called me to cover him. That day I made my debut as a producer by mistakenly erasing a whole bass track ”.

“We started together with an animated film that needed a jazz theme,” they both remember in chorus during the talk they had via zoom with this newspaper. accepted. But that’s how we ended up working together. ” Fun is what goes through the memory of his best works, although sometimes the schedule can be complicated and the pressure increases, as when at the beginning of “Luis Miguel” the production was interrupted by the earthquake and the general times were limited.

“In that series the songs by Luis Miguel that Diego Boneta sings are produced by our friend Kiko Cibrián, but we did the whole score and also the really funniest part, which is the songs of other artists, sometimes fictional, who They appear in the series, for example the songs of Luis Rey and his son that are original of ours ”, says Zlotnik.

“Success gave us more time in the second and third seasons, but there was the pandemic and, although we are used to working virtually, another thing is to arrange for a symphony orchestra by zoom, as we did for ‘La casa de las flores ‘or some parts of’ Maradona ‘” says Froideval, who adds that for the 10 series “we did a lot of things that were left out because in all the series there are optional scenes that later change and can be replaced; here, in addition to the score, we take care of the tanguitos that Maradona sings and things like that ”.

Finally, we asked these two producers what they think is the main difference between Mexican and Argentine rock. Both agreed that “in Mexico there is proximity to the United States and, therefore, both the media and the budgets are more extensive. “But in Argentina we have something that, except perhaps in England at the end of the 60s, there has never been anywhere else, and that is that giants like Charly, Spinetta, Sumo and Cerati coincide in the same place”, they categorically coincide, “and that is something that cannot be replaced by anything.”
