Everyone knows the strange, vague feeling of waking up from a dream that closes off concrete memories and words, but whose atmosphere is just as difficult to shake off. The audience may feel similarly in that “dreamtime” to which the company Tanz.Linz has been inviting with their new piece since Sunday in the Musiktheater (Blackbox).
The choreography comes from the members themselves: Yu-Teng Huang, Katharina Illnar, Angelica Mattiazzi, Lorenzo Ruta and Pedro Tayette have set out together on the trail of dreams, time and how we perceive them – in dreams and in reality. With their eleven colleagues, they unfold a somnambulistic universe on the sand-covered stage (Aleksander Kaplun). Time flies like sand through her hands. Like everything in the piece, figures floating in the air leave a lot of room for associations: Are they baroque angels, superimposed by REM phase curves and color impressions (video: Constantin Georgescu)? Distorted limbs as drawn by Schiele?
The nightmare of the inescapable emerges in repetitive sequences. The journey leads through spooky realms, but also into an Elysium of sweet fruits and various delights. The fluttering costumes by Karin Waltenberger and the sound worlds by Aaron Breeze are consistent with this: a familiar tango meets artificial synthwave. Tanz.Linz impresses in a variety of formations – from the solo to the concentrated energy of the group in its smooth dynamics. Long, strong applause.
Conclusion: A “dream (off) time” from reality that remains diffuse and invites you to let yourself go.
