From the screen to the House of Commons and back
Born in Birkenhead, UK in 1936, Glenda Jackson was already in front of the cameras in the 1950s. She was scouted for the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1960s before rising to stardom in the 1970s.
For her film “Women in Love” Jackson was awarded her first Oscar for best actress in 1971, three years later with her second golden boy for “Man, are you great!” (“A Touch of Class”). She also received a Golden Globe Award and two Emmys for the role of Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603) in the BBC production “Elizabeth R”.
Politically involved from an early age, Jackson later retired from acting and moved to the British House of Commons for the Labor Party in 1992. She sat in Parliament until 2015. Jackson then returned to acting.
In 2018, she received a Tony Award for a Broadway revival of Three Tall Women. In addition to numerous other honors, she also received an International Emmy Award for “Elizabeth Is Missing” in 2020.
