People: Seebacher: Politicians like Brandt and Schmidt impossible today

Willy Brandt’s widow spoke on the talk show “3 nach 9” about the political style of her husband and his party colleague Helmut Schmidt. Today the world looks completely different.

Brigitte Seebacher (76) – journalist, historian and widow of the Nobel Peace Prize winner and Chancellor Willy Brandt – considers politicians like her former husband to be unimaginable today. Men like Brandt or Helmut Schmidt can no longer exist, Seebacher replied to the moderator Giovanni di Lorenzo on the Radio Bremen talk show “3 nach 9” broadcast on Friday evening: “In this media world that we have today, which you all know and in which we all participate.” It’s about people “who only communicate – how should they do it differently? – either with photos or with sayings or with half sentences”. “Back then, politics was made with speeches that were delivered more or less skilfully.”

Seebacher explained to Brandt and Schmidt: “Before every SPD party conference, they cleared all appointments for a weekend, i.e. the weekend before, worked on the speeches and then exchanged them. And then they wrested sentences from each other or negotiated them – like you want. It’s like it’s from another planet when you look at it today.”

In these speeches, the whole world was taken into account, emphasized Seebacher. It must be added that the generation of Schmidt (1918-2015) and Brandt (1913-1992) looked death directly in the eye several times – in emigration, in war. Of course, you can’t blame anyone for the fact that no one went hungry with us today, said Seebacher. “But if you only grow up in prosperity, you tick differently.”
