The city of Ushuaia will welcome winter with the traditional “Longest Night Party” that will run from today until June 21, and will include a combination of artistic, social, sports, and gastronomic activities.
The classic celebration of the Fuegians alludes to the time of the year when the day has less sunlight, which in Tierra del Fuego (due to its geographical location) translates into days where the sun rises around 10 in the morning and it gets dark. shortly after 5 p.m.
June 21, considered the shortest day of the year, and therefore the “longest night”, celebrates the arrival of the winter season and also the consequent lengthening of the hours of sunlight from then on.
The municipality released the official schedule of activities for the festival that will range from theatrical and film proposals to literary and musical proposals for all ages, as well as sporting, social and gastronomic events.
Today at 4:00 p.m. the “Ushuaia city of murals” circuit will be inaugurated, which will allow you to visit works in different parts of the city through a tour on foot or by bus.
There will also be an art exhibition at the Casa de la Cultura and a film series of Latin American films will be presented.
In another order, activities for children will be carried out, such as the “Literary Sleepover “The Magic Key” and the play “Dark Rabbit”.
As for musical shows, there will be a “Rock Night” and another “Tropical Night” with local artists, while tomorrow the play “Farenheit” will be presented and there will be a stand-up show.
There will also be a folk club and an “Electronic Night”.
Likewise, through the Municipal Sports Institute, a yoga meeting and the traditional Las Luces race will be held, with a 3-kilometer route.
For its part, the Women’s Secretariat will join the festivities with the Father’s Day, Gastronomic, Art and Design and Night exhibitions.
In this regard, the reference of the area, Natacha Aldalla, said that “these activities seek to contribute to the economic autonomy of women and equal opportunities.”
On other days of the festival there will also be classic activities such as immersion in the Beagle Channel carried out by a group of cold-water swimmers, at night and with temperatures below zero.
Finally, the municipality’s Secretary of Culture and Education, Belén Molina, commented: “This year, the Longest Night will have different characteristics from the previous ones, but it will not stop being a popular festival that involves the entire community and tourists.”
