Why was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart stressed about his marriage? Anyone who is interested in this sideline in music history will soon be able to read the reasoning in the original if they have the money to spare: On July 6, the London auction house Christie’s will be auctioning off the letter from the summer of 1782 in which the then 26-year-old explained to his close friend Baroness von Waldstätten, why he had to marry Constanze Weber within two days. The auction house expects the autograph to sell for up to 570,000 euros.
Always in private collections
Mozart explains on two pages that he must protect his future wife from a scandal. At the time the letter was written, it was known that Constanze was living under the same roof with Mozart, which prompted her mother to call the police to get her daughter out of the house, thus salvaging her reputation.
“Mozart letters are rare at auction, and there is hardly any other historical figure who gives you a similarly unfiltered look at such an important and private moment,” says Thomas Venning of Christie’s. The letter has always been in private collections and has not been seen by the public or scientists since 1989, a press release said. The letter itself is not precisely dated. In any case, the couple married on August 4, 1782.
