The skin: its care and how to keep it healthy

External factors, such as internal ones that damage our body, are determining factors to take into account when caring for the skin. Changing eating habits and improving the quality of life is a good start to take care of ourselves from the inside out.

In our first meeting we talked about the skin, its care and how to keep it healthy at different ages, both through basic care (cleaning, moisturizing and protecting) and with the help of technology. But the skin, the first organ to form, and the largest in the human body, is not just what is in plain sight.

The things that happen to him do not only have to do with the outside, but also have a lot to do with the inside. inside. That is why to protect and care for it, and especially as one gets older, one must be aware of both external and internal damage. The total sum of the multiple exposure factors, both exogenous (sun, cold, wind, noise, smog, etc.) and endogenous (genetics, sleep, stress, diet) that determine the damage that occurs throughout our body, and what affects our skin.

Beginning to change our bad habits is a one way path. Poor nutrition is one of them. At present we have gone to eat modified, genetically processed and ultra-processed foods. All loaded with preservatives, saccharin, hydrogenated oils, etc., which alter the cell membranes of our entire body and harden them, preventing nutrients from entering, leaving the cells underfed, sick and without energy.

With an intestine, which due to this bad diet becomes permeable, with its cells that remain separated from each other, and that through those cracks that should not be open, let a lot of bacteria and unprocessed food pass through that end up working in the body as if they were toxins. This is what keeps the body in a state of inflammation and puts the immune system on alert, in turn damaging the membranes of the mitochondria, which are the stove where our body’s energy is cooked.

Why does a dermatologist suddenly become a nutritionist?

Not only to have a more complete look, but because the beauty of the skin is based on health. When someone comes to the office to get a laser to remove wrinkles, she’s going to respond to the treatment differently if she’s healthy or if she’s sick. If it is inflamed or if it is not inflamed. It is preferable to delay any treatment until one is in optimum condition, because any treatment that is done on the skin, the response is more favorable if the person is internally prepared to receive it.

A large part of the solution is to pay attention to what we eat, because, although everyday life seems normal, it is often far from healthy. And as Hippocrates said “let food be your medicine”

What would be the eating habits that would lead to a healthier life?

  • Stop eating refined flour (wheat flour, oats, barley, rye). The flour seeds are transgenic, and have been modified so that their plants can withstand droughts, germinate better, etc., and have nothing to do with the original seed. Ancestrally, the body was used to the original seed, but this modified seed, which has gluten, causes the intestinal wall to rupture. The intestinal wall is like a set of cells that are joined together like well-sealed bricks, which have little “hairs” called cilia, forming a compact but selective barrier, which prevents the passage of microbes and most antigens, and in turn, allows the active absorption of nutrients that then pass into the blood and are distributed to the body. When we consume pasta, bread etc. that contain gluten, this breaks the unions between the intestinal cells, and this control disappears, increasing intestinal impermeability, which produces an indiscriminate passage of substances into the blood. It is as if the customs gates have been opened, and the intestine becomes a free port. Things go in that shouldn’t go in, but things also go out that shouldn’t. Nutrients do not pass and toxins pass, causing inflammation. That impermeable intestine means that the body does not recognize that unprocessed food and goes into defense mode, putting the immune system on alert, making it react to anything. Thus triggering inflammatory diseases that are not only dermatological (90% of people suffer from mild diseases such as eczema, allergies, rhinitis, specific urticaria) but can also cause, depending on the person’s genetic predisposition, the development of autoimmune diseases. , infections, digestive, joint, heart or cancer problems. When consuming flours, they must be coconut, rice, almond and brown rice or yamaní.
  • eliminate sugars Excess sugar leads to creating fatty liver. The body can store 800 grams of sugar/glucose in the liver and 500 grams in the muscles. If I overdo it because I don’t do sports and I accumulate sugar, then that excess that doesn’t go to the muscles begins to overflow to the liver and becomes fatty liver.
  • Avoid ultra-processed foods. Swith those that include large amounts of additives, salt, sugar, fat, preservatives, dyes and others. Frozen meals, canned foods, snacks, hams, soft drinks, spreadable cheeses, cookies are ultra-processed. Within its components they have hydrogenated oils that are harmful to health. Which are? Canola oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, etc. All those that are cold pressed are bad for your health. They are oils used by the industry because they are cheaper. It is best to cook with coconut oil. The extra virgin olive, only for seasoning because it oxidizes in cooking. You can also use clarified butter (lactose free)
  • Say no to foods that contain high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) It is an ingredient that is often added to a wide range of processed products to achieve a sweeter taste. Everything that sweetens causes addiction. You can’t stop eating. It is not the natural fructose of the fruit, which can be used and spent in sports. Corn syrup when it enters does not come out, it cannot be used for energy, and it is deposited in the liver and cannot be used. It is forming that fatty liver. Also, it does not tell the satiety center that we are full. When you eat one egg you don’t want to eat six, but you eat one cookie and empty the package. You always go for one more. Experts say that a high and prolonged consumption of HFCS can contribute to the development of diseases such as metabolic syndrome, obesity, hyperglycemia and arterial hypertension.
  • Do not use sweeteners. Sweeteners increase the release of insulin (which is the pro-inflammatory hormone) much more than sugar. When you eat with sweeteners, the body, which always has the function of anticipating and preparing, assumes that something sweet is going to enter, and then it sends you to the brain the signal to release insulin, but since sweet does not enter, it releases it senselessly. Also, saccharin is a food preservative, an antibiotic. So, every time we add sweetener, we are slowly killing the intestinal flora. An intestine that should be like the missionary jungle, flowery, abundant and different (because each bacterium of this flora degrades different types of food), when saccharin is used in everything you want to sweeten, it is as if that jungle had been set on fire. And that’s when they tell you “no I can eat raw vegetables because I don’t like them”. Cellulose is digested by bacteria but with sweeteners you kill them, and that’s why you become food intolerant. But it can be reversed. Changing the sweetener for stevia. But not to be confused with sweetener SWIt is served by stevia that is bought in a diet that does not raise insulin, so the bacterial flora will grow, and little by little, one can eat everything again. But the ideal is not to sweeten.
  • no milk because in addition to lactose, which is a sugar that inflames a lot, it also has casein, which is also a protein that inflames, so it could also be changed to almond milk or nothing. Another source of calcium is in eggs, spinach (which in order to consume it you have to have a non-permeable intestine) This is a gradual transition. In order to climb the ladder, you have to climb the top step, but you have to take the bottom step, because otherwise you won’t move forward. It is step by step.
  • Moderate alcohol. Actually, you should not consume it because they make the fats mobilize less. A glass of wine has 150 calories. How many drinks do you want to drink? White drinks and wines have more sugar than a red.
  • allowed Can I eat a pizza/chocolate on the weekend? It is not a “never again”. It depends on how damaged one is. One must take time to gradually repair the body. That is why it is very difficult to put everything together. Take a few months. Learn little by little to change healthy habits, to avoid relapses.

Changing eating habits is vital to turning off aging genes and turning on longevity genes. It is not a change from one day to the next, but something slow, voluntary and conscious so that it can be established as a healthy way of living life from now to forever.
