Former EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton is now a “Lady Companion” of the oldest British order of knights. The last British governor of Hong Kong, Christopher Patten, is now a “Knight Companion”. Her appointment was announced in April and has now been formalized at a service attended by 800 in Windsor, near London.
Following her ordination to the Order the previous year, Queen Camilla appeared alongside her husband Charles, clad in the Order’s cloak and sporting the distinctive feather on her hat. Heir apparent Prince William and Charles’ youngest brother Prince Edward were present as members, as were former Prime Ministers John Major and Tony Blair.
On the other hand, Charles’ second brother Prince Andrew, who hardly appears in public because of his involvement in an abuse scandal, was missing. At the coronation of King Charles in May, however, Andrew had worn the robe of the order known as the “Most Noble Order of the Garter”.
The eyes of the approximately 3,000 onlookers were particularly drawn to William’s wife, Princess Kate. The 41-year-old, who is not a member of the Order, wore a black and white polka dot dress and pearl teardrop earrings that originally belonged to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.
