Order of the Garter: King Charles III. in medieval garb and Kate shows Diana homage

In 1348, the then King, Edward III, instituted the Order of the Garter and to this day it is considered one of the highest-ranking orders of chivalry in the United Kingdom. The order is led by the supreme sovereign, King Charles III. – who thus celebrated his next premiere as the new king. Just last Saturday he inspected the Trooping the Color Parade in London for the first time in his tenure.

The Order of the Garter did not take place in the English capital again, but is celebrated annually at Windsor Castle. Many fans and onlookers had gathered to marvel at the royal family and the attendants of the Order of the Garter, such as Sir Tony Blair.

Prince William was the 1000th knight

Originally, the “Order of the Garter”, as the knightly order is called in English, was intended to strengthen the knightly bond with the king. But the honor and the title of this special knightly ode is strictly limited. Only 24 officiating bearers are allowed. Prince William received the order in 2008 as the 1000th member, Prince Charles received it in 1948. In addition to him, Prince Edward, Queen Camilla and Princess Anne also wear the order. But members of other royal families can also wear it, for example Willem-Alexander, King of the Netherlands, Margrethe II, Queen of Denmark, and Felipe VI, King of Spain.

Award of the Order of the Garter in a private circle

The process is the same every year. On Garter Day, the Knights meet at Windsor Castle after sharing a meal in Waterloo Chamber. In a public procession, led by the king or queen, the group moves on foot or by carriage to the service at St George’s Chapel. There is a clear seating plan at the ceremony. This is followed by the awarding of the Order, to which the public and the press have no access. Catherine Ashton, Baroness Ashton of Upholland and Christopher Patten, Lord Patten of Barnes were honored this year – both are British politicians.
