Christopher Nolan has a warning for those who go to see “Openheimer”: the movie could destroy you emotionally. talking to the magazine Wired In a new interview, Nolan said some early viewers of “Oppenheimer” had a visceral reaction to the film, which follows the theoretical physicist J.Robert Oppenheimer (cillian murphy) while creating the atomic bomb to end World War II.
“Some people leave the movie absolutely devastated”Nolan said of the first screenings. “They can’t talk. I mean, there’s an element of fear that’s in the story and in the fundamentals. But the love of the characters, the love of the relationships, is stronger than ever.”
Nolan later added: “It’s an intense experience, because it’s an intense story. I recently showed it to a filmmaker who said it’s some kind of horror movie. I don’t disagree.”
“The Oppenheimer story is all impossible questions,” Nolan added. “Impossible ethical dilemmas, paradox. There are no easy answers in his story. There are just tough questions, and that’s what makes the story so compelling. I think we were able to find a lot of things to be optimistic about in the movie, genuinely, but there’s kind of a bigger question hanging over it. It seemed essential that there were questions at the end that you left resonating in people’s minds and that sparked discussion.”

Starring alongside Murphy in the drama are Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh and more. The film is Nolan’s first R-rated release since “Insomnia” from 2002.
“Oppenheimer” opens in theaters nationwide on July 20 from Universal Pictures.
