Chad Stahelskithe director of four films of “John Wick” with Keanu Reevesspent most of his press tour in “John Wick: Chapter 4” earlier this year by urging the Academy to create an Oscar category for stunt work. At the time, the filmmaker said the main problem with the Oscars not awarding stuntmen was that there were no backstage conversations for them to do so. Now it looks like Stahelski is changing that.

In a recent interview with ComicBookMovie.com to mark the Blu-ray release of “John Wick: Chapter 4”Stahelski announced that talks about a stunt Oscar had finally taken place “in the last few months” between the Academy and a contingent of stunt coordinators.

“We’ve been meeting with members of the Academy and we’ve had these conversations and, to be honest, it’s just been incredibly positive, incredibly instructive.”Stahelski said. “I think, for the first time, we’ve made real progress in making this happen.”

Stahelski said he thinks a stunt Oscar “can happen as soon as, you know, the next Oscars, or at least the next one. At the latest, the next three or four years.”

“The question is, we haven’t had real conversations about how you determine what to award,” Stahleski said. “Is it like the best trick? Is it the best choreography? The best action sequence? The best set of doubles? Does the specialist coordinator understand? Does the guy doing the gag get it? The martial arts choreographer? The fight choreography? Double action? The second unit director? The editor? Who gets the prize? These are all great questions that smart people on both sides need to talk about, the specialist community and the Academy.”

Stahleski noted that in “John Wick” had three fight choreographers. So would each person receive an Oscar? These are the details that need to be fixed.”.

“For the last three months, we’ve been talking to members of the Academy, turning on this huge machine to have these discussions and, again, being open and fair to both sides,” the director told ComicBookMovie.com. “Both parties have been incredibly positive. There is no one we have met so far who thinks antagonistically to this as if everyone on both sides wants this to happen. They want stunts at the Oscars, it’s going to happen It’s just how we do it in the fairest and most thoughtful way possible”.

The 96th Academy Awards are already scheduled for March 10, 2024.
