Luc Besson: director acquitted again in court

The trial of the rape allegations against Luc Besson appears to have been completed: the court has once again acquitted him.

Acquittal in the case of Luc Besson (64): the well-known film director has been acquitted by France’s highest court of appeal in Paris. The court thus rejected the allegations of rape by Belgian-Dutch actress Sand Van Roy (35).

The actress made public in May 2018 that she had been sexually abused by Besson in a luxury hotel in Paris. Her original lawsuit that she was raped by the director was dismissed in 2021 with Besson’s acquittal. The Paris court has now rejected the appeal that was lodged thereafter.

Is this the end of the process?

In a statement, Besson’s attorney, Thierry Marembert, said the acquittal upheld all decisions over the past five years that found the filmmaker not guilty. The process that was initiated in 2018 was finally completed.

Besson had always maintained his innocence in the ongoing proceedings – even after other women had reported allegations of sexual abuse. In a statement against Sand Van Roy’s allegations, he described them as “allegations by a fantasist”.
