The new regulations include the Expanded seven-day consecutive or non-consecutive theatrical run in 10 of the top 50 US marketsno later than 45 days after the initial release in 2024. For year-end films with expansions after January 10, 2025, distributors must submit release plans to the Academy for verification.
Release plans for end-of-year movies must include a planned expanded submission to be completed no later than January 24, 2025. Launches in territories outside of the United States can count toward two of the 10 markets, and that includes 15 main international destinations plus the film’s home territory.

The Academy, a Variety report indicated, openly expressed its belief that a healthy theater environment is vital to the success of Hollywood.
In a joint statement, the CEO of the Academy, Bill Kramerand the president of the Academy, Janet Yangthey said: “As we do every year, we have been reviewing and evaluating our theatrical eligibility requirements for the Oscars. In support of our mission to celebrate and honor the arts and sciences of motion pictures, We expect this enlarged cinematic footprint to increase the visibility of films around the world. and encourage the public to experience our art form in theaters.”
