Wearing a top hat is compulsory for men – and women’s hats are often extremely conspicuous. Royal Ascot – always worth a visit for King Charles and Queen Camilla too.
For the second time this week, the British royal couple appeared at the Royal Ascot horse race on Wednesday. As usual, King Charles (74) and Queen Camilla (75) drove up to the start of the race day in a carriage procession. The monarch wore a gray morning suit and a black top hat. Camilla came in a soft pink summer dress with a beige hat.
Musical composer Andrew Lloyd Webber (75) and his wife Madeleine Gurdon (60) were also allowed to drive up in a carriage. Princess Anne’s daughter, Zara Tindall (42), and her husband Mike (44) spent the second day at the famous racetrack near Windsor.
Charles and Camilla also entered horses from their own stables at Ascot. Camilla’s horse “Saga” missed a prize on Tuesday. On Wednesday they pinned their hopes on the gelding “Reach for the Moon”.
Ascot is a popular event, mainly because of the strictly enforced dress code in parts of the spectator area, for which many visitors dress up specially. For example, in the “Royal Enclosure” it is compulsory for men to wear a top hat. Women must wear a hat – off-the-shoulder dresses are not allowed. The multi-day horse racing spectacle lasts until Saturday.
