Charles and Camilla are not just spectators at Ascot. The two also send horses from their own stables to the race. Now there is reason to be happy.
To royal acclaim, Charles III’s horse Desert Hero is raced to victory in a race at Ascot on Thursday. In the stands, the 74-year-old monarch and his wife Queen Camilla (75) were delighted with the triumph. Charles then shook hands with jockey Tom Marquand, beaming with joy.
A video published by the Sun newspaper showed the king accidentally knocking over the small trophy after the award ceremony. It was not initially known what he would do with the prize money of £50,000 (€58,000).
For the first two days of Ascot, Charles’ horses had gone empty-handed. His mother Queen Elizabeth II had celebrated more than 20 victories during her 70-year reign.
Ascot is a popular event, mainly because of the strictly enforced dress code in parts of the spectator area, for which many visitors dress up specially. For example, in the “Royal Enclosure” it is compulsory for men to wear a top hat. Women must wear a hat – off-the-shoulder dresses are not allowed. The multi-day horse racing spectacle lasts until Saturday.
