Reaction to Oprah interview: Princess Kate is said to have pulled strings

According to the latest reports, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s path to their own medium empire seems to have been less successful: the collaboration with the podcast platform Spotify was recently discontinued. Concerns about her Netflix deal are also growing louder. However, the streaming service confirmed that further projects with Harry and Meghan are being planned.

A new book, however, shifts attention to a media debacle in the royal family that dates back a little longer: Harry and Meghan’s interview with American talk show host Oprah Winfrey. This time at the center of the action: Princess Kate.

Oprah Interview: Serious allegations against the royal family

More than two years ago, the American television station CBS published an interview with Meghan and Harry that hit the royal world like a bomb. The couple explained their decision to leave the British royal family to Oprah Winfrey. The central justification revolved around the racist reporting that Meghan Markle is said to have plunged into a deep depression. She felt that she was not taken seriously and received no help. In the interview, she theatrically revealed that at least one member of the royal family is said to have asked how “dark her baby’s skin will be”:

According to Oprah Winfrey, who made the comment on son Archie’s skin color could not elicit the couple either in front of or behind the camera. However, she confirmed that it had not come from Queen Elizabeth or Prince Philip.

What followed rarely happens: Buckingham Palace responded with an official statement. It said the family was dismayed to learn more about the extent of the situation the couple has found themselves in over the past few years and how challenging the time has been for Harry and Meghan. “The issues raised, particularly that of skin color, are worrying. While some perceptions differ, the issue is taken very seriously and discussed privately within family circles,” it said.

Princess Kate wanted a ‘harder’ response to Oprah’s interview

These are exactly the lines in a new book by Times of London reporter Valentine Low (“Courtier: The Hidden Power Behind The Crown”), in which an insider reveals that Prince William and his wife Kate are very involved were the composition of this statement. The couple wanted to make the choice of words “tougher,” according to an excerpt that appeared in The Times. They felt the institution needed to state clearly that much of what Meghan and Harry said in the interview , will not be accepted.

According to this insider, Kate insisted that the statement must contain a sentence that makes it clear that not everything that was said was considered “true”. The addition “Some perceptions differ” was confirmed by the princess herself. According to Valentine Low, the first version of the statement was significantly milder.

The journalist’s source said: “She (Kate) isn’t getting as much credit as she should because she’s so subtle. She’s playing the long game. She always has one eye on, ‘This is my life and my historical path and one thing One day I’ll be Queen'”.

As speculation continues over Kate’s reaction to Harry and Meghan’s interview, the British media regulator has branded a hate column against Duchess Meghan as “sexist”. It is the first time that the Independent Press Standards Organization (Ipso) has upheld a gender discrimination complaint. Some of the Sun’s comments by author Jeremy Clarkson are “pejorative and biased.” The newspaper must now inform its readers about this on its front page.
