The title already has it all and yet – or maybe because of it – actress Sarah Jessica Parker had concerns about having to strip down in the role of Carrie Bradshaw even before filming “Sex and The City”. The 58-year-old reveals why in a recent interview on “The Howard Stern Show”.
Sarah Jessica Parker: ‘I don’t feel comfortable taking nude pictures’
In addition to female empowerment, beautiful clothing and true friendship, “Sex and The City” is primarily about sex. When she first saw the script, Parker had concerns about possible nudity. “I found the script really interesting and exciting and different and fresh that I had never seen before,” she says. Sex and The City creator Darren Star wrote the role of sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw with her in mind, she says. And she also found the role exciting, but immediately expressed her concerns about possible nude scenes.
“The only thing I said to him was, ‘I don’t feel comfortable doing nudity,'” Parker said. She was convinced that these would definitely appear in the course of the series, even if not immediately in the first episode. But that wasn’t a problem for director Star. He said: “Then just don’t do it – I don’t care! We have other actors and if they feel comfortable with nude scenes, then they will do it. You don’t have to do it,” reports the actress.

When asked by the presenter if she didn’t do the nudes because of possible body insecurities or because she didn’t want to be put in a certain ‘category’ of actress, Parker says, “I guess I was just shy. I got me never felt comfortable showing myself like that.” You have never judged others who show themselves in nude scenes, but rather admired. “It wasn’t a moral issue,” she explains.

Nudity, violence and vulgar language are a rarity on US television. An exception is the pay TV channel HBO, which is considered to be extremely liberal in dealing with sex and violence – and on which the series “Sex and The City” was launched with great success in the late 1990s. “I knew we could say anything we wanted on HBO. Cynthia Nixon, who plays the role of quick-witted lawyer Miranda Hobbes in the cult series, sees things differently. In “Sex and The City” she shows herself vulgarly again and again, the 57-year-old also has no problem with nudity and regularly drops the covers in the total of 94 episodes. Also in the spin-off “And Just Like That” Nixon is already seen topless in the first episode. Parker, on the other hand, remains true to her nude line. Shyness may no longer be the reason for this, but Carrie Bradshaw’s class, which we have known and loved since episode 1 of the series, is.

The second season of the “Sex and The City” spin-off “And Just Like That” is currently running on Sky and the streaming provider “WOW”. Carrie and her New York friends take center stage again, with the exception of Kim Cattrall aka Samantha Jones, who is now dealing with the challenges of life in her fifties. Aside from the usual drama, plenty of sex and stunning costumes, there’s a lot more diversity in “And Just Like That” – a point that was widely criticized in the original.
